My Superpower Is Kind of Cute

Chapter 17: Me and My Old Man

Qi Yun scratched his head and said hesitantly, “It sounds a bit awkward to put it that way, but I guess that’s basically what it means.” “What the hell are you getting at?” I was instantly annoyed. So, after letting him have his way with me all day, I’d end up with the label of being “sexually unsatisfied.” Qi Yun shrugged. “It means exactly what it says. Actually, it’s not such a bad thing. It doesn’t cost me anything, anyway. Who knows—maybe you, Mengmeng, actually have spiritual power too, it just hasn’t been tapped yet.” “Unlock?” I frowned; hearing him put it that way made me even more uncomfortable. “Do you think you’re a real estate developer or something?” Qi Yun chuckled softly. “So, Mengmeng, let me merge with you a few more times—who knows, maybe your spiritual power will really get ‘developed’.” “In your dreams.” I shot him a withering glance and turned to change my clothes. This guy spends every day trying to fill my head with these twisted ideas. I don’t know if it was because, as Qi Yun said, he used less spiritual energy this time, or if I’d gradually gotten used to the energy he emitted when he possessed me, but this time I did recover faster than last time. It only took two days—I was back to normal by noon. Before I even had a chance to celebrate, I got a call from my old man that same evening, telling me to go with them to Yadou Village tomorrow. If he hadn’t called right then, I almost would’ve forgotten all about it. “We’re going tomorrow? That soon? I haven’t had time to prepare at all,” I stammered over the phone, feeling quite reluctant, since this would cut into my precious time for sleeping in. “It’s not like we’re going on a blind date—what preparation do you need?” “But… but what about my lottery shop?” I tried one last desperate plea. There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line. Just as I thought I might have a chance, a cold, indifferent voice uttered four words: “It’s none of my damn business.” Then he slammed the phone down, leaving me standing there, completely bewildered. Qi Yun came over to me with concern and asked, “What’s wrong?” “None of your damn business.” I shot him a glance, handed him the TV remote, and got up, wandering back to the bedroom in a daze. Now I’d completely lost the mood to binge-watch my show… The next day, under the relentless assault of my alarm clock, I got up with great reluctance, washed up, combed my hair to look like a grown-up, changed into a flashy set of casual clothes, packed two changes of clothes, and took a ride to the old man’s toy company. It was located in a rather remote industrial zone, more than ten kilometers outside the city center. Two large buses were already parked at the entrance, and employees were boarding them one after another. The company wasn’t very big, and since some people had chosen to work overtime or take the day off, the two buses seemed more than enough. I walked up, and the employees all recognized me, greeting me warmly. I responded cordially to each one. I glanced at one of the buses and saw the old man inside talking to the driver, seemingly confirming the final route. The old man spotted me too and gave me a cool, aloof nod. I said nothing, slunk onto the bus, and took a seat at the very back. Ever since I was a kid, I’d been afraid of my dad—not that he beat me or anything. Sons tend to get along better with their mothers, while daughters get along better with their fathers; it seems like an unchanging law of nature. “Mengmeng, is this your family’s business?” Qi Yun asked me point-blank. “That’s a dangerous way of thinking. What era are we in that it’s still fashionable for sons to take over their fathers’ businesses? Look around—which of the Fortune 500 companies practices a hereditary system?” “If we were on the Fortune 500 list, I wouldn’t have to worry about this. I’d have let you be a rich kid living off my coattails long ago.” The old man’s expression was a bit complicated at that moment. “Children have their own destinies, Dad,” I said, waving my hand dismissively and shooting Qi Yun a disdainful glance. “Being a rich kid isn’t all that great—who knows, I might die and no one would even notice. Besides, I don’t have a knack for management; you’d still have to run the company yourself. I’m perfectly happy being a lottery boss—I can even pop by the store every now and then to let the manager pick some numbers for me.” Hearing me say this, the old man shook his head, didn’t say anything more, and simply closed his eyes to rest. A few dozen minutes later, the bus pulled up beside a farm field. We got off and walked less than a kilometer down a country road before our large group arrived at Yadou Village. That greasy-faced, heavily built man we’d seen earlier—accompanied by several village officials—was standing at the village entrance, his face flushed with excitement. As soon as he saw us approaching, he rushed forward to greet us, shook my dad’s hand warmly, and then gave me a greasy hug. After the hug, I looked at him with disgust, but he ignored me completely and continued greeting the others. The fat man cleared his throat and said loudly, “Welcome, everyone, to our cheerful little town, where entertainment and leisure come together. I hope you all have a wonderful time and enjoy yourselves to the fullest. At this very moment, in this very setting, I’d like to recite a poem: ‘Spring waters flow to the south and north of my cottage; day after day, flocks of seagulls come.’ The flower-lined path has never been swept for guests, yet today it blooms just for you…” Halfway through, his expression turned a bit strange. I chuckled to myself—he was trying too hard to show off; it was obvious he’d forgotten the words. “Bravo, bravo!” Seeing that the fat man was about to burst from holding it in, the people behind him clapped and cheered repeatedly, allowing him to catch his breath. He then skipped over the topic and led our group to check out our rooms first. As we walked, Qi Yun whispered to me, “Mengmeng, I was thinking…” “What the hell do you want? Nothing. Get lost.” I shot him a withering glance and flatly refused.
