Chapter 27: The Show
“What are you waiting for? Go for it!” Qi Yun kept egging me on in my ear; that mischievous grin on his face gave away his ulterior motives. I sighed and abruptly walked up to the two young men. I pulled out my phone to double-check Zhao Leichuan’s location and glanced inside—an alleyway stretched off to the right, and from where I stood, I couldn’t see a thing. When the two young men saw me stop in front of them, they froze for a moment. Then, noticing my right arm wrapped in gauze, they let down their guard. Puffing on their cigarettes, they said with a hint of mockery, “This way’s blocked. If you’re heading to German Orthopedics, turn left at the end of the alley.” I snapped, “No, let me in.” These two really did think of themselves as gatekeepers. “Oh?” They exchanged a knowing smile. One of them flicked the cigarette butt from his fingertip, stomped it out with force, and gave me a sly look, his eyes gleaming with a mysterious smile. Half-warning, half-teasing, he said, “It’s very dangerous in there, you know. Once you go in, you might not be able to keep your other arm either.” I gave a soft snort. It’s not like I’m a pregnant woman trying to protect her baby—why are they talking to me about “keeping” this or that? Do they really think I’m easily scared? I’d grown tired of that kind of sweet-talking back in middle school. Ignoring them, I took a stride forward, chest out and head held high, ready to make my move. But the two didn’t stop me, nor were they in a hurry to act; they just slowly followed behind me, entering with me. After walking a dozen or so meters, I turned right into the alley and took a look. The scene before me was quite intense. It turned out to be a dead-end alley, crowded with five or six young thugs. Zhao Leichuan was already sprawled face-down on the ground, gasping for breath in ragged, heavy breaths. His face looked like a dye shop had exploded all over it—red, blue, and purple colors were all over the place—a truly gruesome sight. As for the other youths, their clothes were merely a bit disheveled, and they had few visible injuries—it was obvious at a glance that this had been a one-sided massacre. “Hmm, there’s a pretty girl here, too.” Qi Yun’s focus has always been a bit different from mine; his attention was entirely fixed on a spot in the corner. I looked in the direction he was pointing and only then realized that Xia Chun was here too. She’d been blocked from view by one or two of them earlier, so I almost missed her. Upon closer inspection, her situation didn’t look good either—her hands were pinned down by those beasts, and a towel was stuffed in her mouth. When she saw me appear, she started choking out muffled sobs. “Holy shit, is this an action movie? A Hong Kong-style one?” I couldn’t help but exclaim, instinctively reaching for my phone to snap a photo and post it on my Moments. The leader of the group—a guy with dyed blonde hair and a face full of acne—saw me approaching. He arrogantly planted his foot on Zhao Leichuan’s head, shot me a disdainful glance, and asked, “Who’s that?” “No idea. Must’ve run in here just to get himself killed.” The two guys behind me seemed to be eagerly anticipating the look on my face as I peed my pants. They let out a weird scream and ran right up to me just to get a look, but they were in for a letdown. Faced with this scene, I was speechless—yet I couldn’t resist showing off. In the end, I said smugly, ““The girl I’ve got my eye on—this guy doesn’t know any better than to try and steal her from me, so I’ll have to teach him a lesson first. She’s got quite the temper; she wanted to call the police and get help, but I’m making her wait here for now. I’ll take her for a drive in a bit, and tonight we’re checking into a five-star hotel.” “We live in a democratic society—you can’t just go around kidnapping women like that.” After hearing his grand, delusional plan, I was genuinely scared out of my wits. If I hadn’t shown up in time, this could’ve easily turned into a criminal case. I really don’t know what those thugs were raised on—how could they have such dangerous ideas in their heads? Xia Chun’s little face had gone completely pale with fear, and she looked at me as if pleading for help. Qi Yun stood there, observing the entire scene from a bird’s-eye view, and said with great excitement, “This is some drama right here.” There was no way I was going to let something like this happen right in front of me. My expression hardened instantly as I glared at the group. “If I told you to give up this ridiculous plan right now, you wouldn’t listen, would you?” “Who the hell are you?” Sure enough, as soon as they heard me say that, the group immediately moved to beat me up. “Mengmeng, fight back!” Qi Yun had returned to my side by then, eager to merge with me and transform. I quickly stopped Qi Yun. “Don’t.” Zhao Leichuan and Xia Chun were still there, and unless absolutely necessary, I didn’t want to transform in front of them. Seeing that he wouldn’t get a chance to show off, Qi Yun shook her head in resignation, twirled her hair, and swayed off to the side. With that matter settled, I slowly stood up and said, “Let me say a few words before you make your move.” “Any last words?” The men weren’t in a hurry to attack either; they kept glaring at me provocatively, creating a tense atmosphere as if a pack of wolves had surrounded a single sheep, ready to pounce and tear it apart at any moment—little did they know that I was actually that very “Happy Sheep.” I tapped the wall of the alley to my left with the back of my hand, a faint smile playing on my lips. “How about I put on a little show for you guys?” The guy with the yellow hair looked at me suspiciously. “Are you going to make a person disappear?” I shook my head. “Sorry, I only know how to make people take a dump. What I want to show you is a different kind of act.”
