My Superpower Is Kind of Cute

Chapter 7: Who’s the Main Character?

The girl smiled radiantly and said softly, “Surely you’ll tell me your name this time, won’t you?” I muttered, “Don’t you usually introduce yourself before asking someone else’s name?” Our back-and-forth instantly left Zhao Leichuan feeling ignored. He shot me a resentful glance, stepped between me and the girl, and asked her softly, “Do you know Chen Meng?” “His name is Chen Meng?” Upon hearing this, the girl looked at me in disbelief at first, then covered her mouth and giggled, “That’s pretty cute.” My expression was a bit complicated—that was exactly why I didn’t want her to know my name. I couldn’t shake the feeling that she was actually insulting me… “Hi, my name is Xia Chun.” The girl must have noticed the awkwardness on my face, so she stifled her chuckle and confidently held out her hand in a friendly gesture—though it wasn’t hard to see a hint of a smile lingering in her eyes. I reached out and gave her a perfunctory handshake. Xia Chun’s hand was soft, and her palm held a hint of warmth. My face flushed instantly—not because of the physical contact, but mainly because I hadn’t washed my hands after using the restroom… But since we’d already shaken hands, I certainly wasn’t going to be foolish enough to mention it. Seeing me like this, Xia Chun once again assumed I was shy. She let out a silvery laugh and said teasingly, “Chen Meng, why are you blushing again? I remember you were like this this afternoon, too.” Zhao Leichuan gradually sensed that things were taking a strange turn. He put his arm around my shoulder and blurted out, “My buddy’s a total homebody—he always reacts like this around girls. Don’t take it personally. By the way, how did you two meet?” Xia Chun gave me a mischievous wink and said, “We met this afternoon. He helped me pick up my wallet. Looks like we’re meant to be.” “Damn,” I heard Zhao Leichuan mutter beside me. “I really am a fucking busybody.” “Xia Chun, come on down.” Just then, a girl down by the pool spotted the three of us standing on the balcony chatting. She called out Xia Chun’s name, motioning for her to come down. Xia Chun glanced down, waved and nodded, then turned to leave. “I’m heading down first. Let’s talk later.” As I watched Xia Chun’s figure disappear, I finally shook off Zhao Leichuan’s hand resting on my shoulder and gave him a questioning look. “So how did you two meet?” “We met at a coffee shop. She works there.” “She started working at such a young age?” I was a bit surprised by this and shot Zhao Leichuan a disdainful look. Here was a young girl already working, yet he had the nerve to just laze around at home. Zhao Leichuan, of course, ignored my disdainful look and said nonchalantly, “No, she just finished her college entrance exams. She’s working a summer job, and she’s going to college next semester.” “Oh, I see.” I nodded and said softly, “By the way, you were just a couch potato during your summer breaks too, weren’t you?” Zhao Leichuan ignored my comment once again and spoke with a look of sheer delight on his face, “That time I went out for coffee, she forgot to take the hundred I’d left on the table and even gave me sixty too much change. She looked so adorably clueless.” I rolled my eyes and instantly lost all interest in talking to him. That last part gave me goosebumps—I couldn’t shake the feeling that Zhao Leichuan, that moron, was actually describing me… “With her working like that, how come the coffee shop hasn’t gone under yet?” In the end, I couldn’t help but speak up. Zhao Leichuan shot me a scornful glare and said, “I have no idea about that. Why are you asking so many questions? Mengmeng—let me tell you, she’s the one I’ve got my eye on. Don’t try to steal her from me.” At the end, he muttered under his breath, “If I’d known about what happened between you two this afternoon, I’d never have dragged her over here to show her off to you.” I shrugged nonchalantly. “You shouldn’t have a problem with me describing her as a pure, flawless swan, right?” “Hmm.” Zhao Leichuan nodded, looking at me suspiciously as he waited for me to continue. “Then you’re just a toad from the sewer—and you still want to go after her? Screw you.” I laughed unrestrainedly, taunting Zhao Leichuan right in front of me. Zhao Leichuan’s face instantly turned the color of pig liver. After a moment, he managed to squeeze out, “Fuck, I’m putting this out there today: if I don’t get Xia Chun, I’ll write my name backward.” I froze for a moment, then blurted out, “That’d make it ‘Zhao Chuanlei’… which sounds like ‘wearing a bra’… Damn, how perverted are you?” “You’re the one with the dirty mind—how dare you blame me?” Just as the two of us were having a blast trading barbs, Qi Yun appeared out of nowhere behind me. He placed a hand on my shoulder and whispered in my ear, “Something’s off here.” “Huh?” Startled by Qi Yun’s sudden appearance, I instinctively turned to look at him and said irritably, “You shouldn’t scare me like that.” “Mengmeng, are you crazy? Who are you talking to?” Zhao Leichuan looked at me, completely baffled. Of course, he couldn’t see Qi Yun, so from his perspective, I was just tilting my head and talking to thin air behind me. “Huh?” Only then did I realize Zhao Leichuan was still right in front of me. I covered my forehead and blurted out an excuse: “No, no—looks like I’ve had a bit too much to drink. Oh, I think I have a missed call. You go ahead and head downstairs; I’ll be right down to meet you.” I motioned for him to leave. “No way, your tolerance is getting worse and worse. You’ve only had one can… Are you okay?” Zhao Leichuan looked at me with concern, which warmed my heart, but after I insisted repeatedly, he finally left the balcony, glancing back every few steps. As soon as Zhao Leichuan was gone, I crouched down on the ground—to avoid anyone downstairs seeing me talking to myself—and frowned as I asked Qi Yun, “Something’s off here. Does he think I’m wearing too much? If he wants to see me naked, he’ll just have to go home and turn on his computer.” Qi Yun shook his head, a rare look of seriousness on his face. “It’s not that. I sense a stream of spiritual energy slowly approaching.” “What the heck is that?” I asked, looking puzzled. I vaguely recalled Qi Yun mentioning something about “spiritual energy” before, but I’d never paid it any mind. Seeing my reaction, Qi Yun sighed and said softly, “On our Hezhong Continent, the level of a person’s spiritual power determines their strength and status. But not everyone can cultivate spiritual power—it depends on innate talent and hard work. The main way to cultivate spiritual power is to absorb the spiritual energy from all things in heaven and earth… but in your world, the spiritual energy is surprisingly low.” “Stop!” I rudely cut Qi Yun off—he was getting more and more carried away. “Isn’t this just some damn fantasy cultivation story? Your alternate world is really something else. By the way, why don’t you check if I have any spiritual power?” To me, absorbing spiritual energy seemed to share a certain similarity with Sun Wukong’s “King of the World Fist.” Qi Yun shot me a disapproving look. “I’m being serious here. Since I arrived, I haven’t come across a single person with spiritual energy—which means you’re basically all Muggles. That’s why I’m a bit concerned about that approaching spiritual energy; my intuition tells me it’s coming for you guys.” “You’ve got to be kidding me?” I couldn’t believe it, but I had to accept it—after all, this was coming from a ghost who’d already turned my world upside down. If an ordinary person had said that, I definitely wouldn’t have given them the time of day. Seeing that I believed him, Qi Yun instead adopted an indifferent expression, giving me a half-smile as he fell silent. “Which is stronger—your spiritual energy or that approaching force?” Seeing he didn’t speak, I asked timidly. Qi Yun snorted dismissively. “All I can say is that the spiritual energy approaching us is shockingly weak.” I immediately breathed a sigh of relief and said flatteringly as I stood beside Qi Yun, “That’s good… Big Shot, if anyone really comes after us later, we’ll be counting on you.” Qi Yun hesitated for a moment before saying, “But… but the thing is, I’ve soul-traveled here. Back on the Hezhong Continent, I could’ve handled it with one hand, but since coming here, I’ve lost my physical body, and my spiritual power seems to be constantly suppressed—I can’t unleash it at all. You saw it this afternoon; just materializing my foot is already my absolute limit right now…” My face immediately fell, and I glared at Qi Yun exasperatedly. “So after all that nonsense, your attempt to show off backfired. Soul-transmigration, total loss of spiritual power, devoting yourself to cultivation using memories from a past life, and then staging all kinds of comebacks… Damn it, how come you seem more like the protagonist than I do?”
