Chapter 14: Longing for Joy, Longing for Buddha
This was Zeng Qiang, the head chef of the Bihai Grand Hotel! He had mutated! Seeing the chef whose legs had turned into massive cleavers, Zuo Chen couldn’t help but narrow his eyes. He’d already encountered two mutated zombies; the one in the basement of the biological research institute had been the toughest. Back at the shopping mall, if he hadn’t just happened to digest his own body and break free from the tentacled zombie’s grip, the outcome might have been uncertain. Judging by this walking cleaver in front of him, it should be quite a bit trickier to deal with than the tentacled zombie… “Thud…” The chef dropped something. “Ah… Help… Help…” It was actually a person—a living person! The man was a young adult who had completely lost the use of his legs; he was struggling to crawl through the blood-stained mud on the ground but couldn’t get to his feet at all. This guy actually tied someone up and brought them here—what on earth is he up to? The Head Chef paid no attention to the human who had already broken down. Instead, he walked over to the glass wall smeared with blood, waved his hands, and began scribbling on the wall, etching various symbols into the thick layer of blood. Erzi was still standing there motionless—left hand at six, right hand at seven—not daring to even breathe. Without Zuo Chen’s orders, he was now completely cowed. Having lived through the apocalypse for so long, he naturally knew what this kind of limb-mutated zombie meant. Zuo Chen stared intently at the head chef, who was continuously waving his arms, his cat-like eyes betraying a look of disbelief. This zombie with mutated legs seemed to be… painting! Its “paint” was nothing but a slurry of blood and flesh! But since this guy was clearly out of his mind, while a few of the shapes he drew had some semblance of order, the vast majority were nothing more than random scribbles. In this blood-red hell, a beam of sunlight streamed down from above; a human wailed in a pool of blood, while a demon-like creature scribbled on the wall with its arms—a scene that felt as though it belonged in the very depths of hell itself. Suddenly, the head chef’s movements came to an abrupt halt, and a gasp escaped his lips. He quickly turned his head, sniffing the air, and walked toward the direction where Zuo Chen and the cat were. They’d been discovered! Zuo Chen instantly realized that the chef had spotted him and Erzi. To be a master chef, one’s sense of smell and taste must be exceptionally keen—even as a zombie, this trait remains. “Damn his nose—run to the left!” Zuo Chen ordered. He leaped from Erzi’s head onto the ceiling, his bone claws digging deep into the ceiling as he charged toward the head chef. “What?”
