Jiang Tang was once celebrated as a genius, but his remarkable abilities eventually turned him into a resource that powerful organizations wanted to control. After escaping that role, he enters a world filled with cultivators, factions, and larger-than-life figures who all seem determined to define him before he can define himself. Some see a future ruler, others a dangerous rival, and still others simply a useful worker. Jiang, however, insists that he wants an ordinary life. The problem is that every new encounter makes that ordinary future harder to reach—and reveals more about why his abilities matter.
Chapter 13: The Extreme Yin Twins
The stone wall in one corner of the ant chamber suddenly shattered. A massive, ferocious head peered in, spewing a jet of black flame to meet the icy wind generated by the brother and sister’s palm strikes. Instantly, the two forces canceled each other out, transforming into a searing wave of heat. “The Ant King!” The brother and sister both froze in surprise. “Hmph, I’ve finally found you two.” The sudden voice startled both siblings. “How is that possible?” They knew full well that although the Ant King was powerful, it was merely a third-tier demon insect—it couldn’t possibly speak human language. Soon, they realized the speaker wasn’t the Ant King at all, but a tiny figure standing atop its snarling head, engulfed in flames! “You two must have lured all those cultivators out here, didn’t you? How dare you disturb this sovereign’s slumber! Today, I’ll use you both as an offering to satisfy my hunger.” After speaking, the little figure floated back, leaving the Ant King to face both of them alone. The Ant King’s body flickered, appearing before the brother and sister as fast as lightning; its powerful mandibles, like iron pincers, seemed poised to snap them in half. “Watch out!” The brother and sister both leaped back ten feet in unison, raising their hands simultaneously to summon a Crescent Moon Blade, which they then hurled at the Ant King. “Clang! The crescent blades struck the Ant King’s mandibles but failed to inflict even a scratch. Yet the siblings’ assault did not stop. Almost the moment the Crescent Moon Blades were deflected by the Ant King’s hard mandibles, the two suddenly clapped their palms together. Immediately, a chill spread outward, and an ice dart rapidly coalesced between their palms. “Xuanyin Ice,” the little man said with a sinister smile, though he showed no intention of intervening. In the blink of an eye, the ice dart took shape. As the brother and sister thrust their palms forward simultaneously, the dart shot out, hurtling toward the Ant King’s head. The Ant King showed not the slightest fear; he opened his mouth and spat a ball of black flame at the ice dart. However, the moment the black flame made contact with the ice dart, it seemed as though the dart had plunged into water—the raging black flame froze in an instant, and ice crystals rapidly spread along the black flame toward the Ant King. In the blink of an eye, the Ant King’s entire body was frozen solid. “Strike!” the brother and sister shouted in unison, and the two Crescent Blades immediately slashed at the Ant King from left and right. “Petty tricks,” the little man said. By the time he spoke, the Crescent Blades had already struck the Ant King. Instantly, ice crystals spattered in a shower, yet the Ant King, unscathed, flickered into motion and appeared beside the man the next moment, his massive pincers snapping down mercilessly. But then, a strange scene unfolded! There was no spatter of blood, nor the sound of flesh and bone being torn apart; the man’s figure actually dissipated like mist. While the Ant King was momentarily stunned, the woman swept her hand through the air. A flash of cold light followed as the Crescent Moon Blade leapt past the Ant King’s side at an awkward angle. In the next instant, the Ant King’s body tilted slightly, and one of its legs actually hit the ground first. The Ant King was furious. Though he was missing a leg, his speed remained undiminished; he appeared before the woman in a flash and clamped down with his massive pincers! Another strange scene unfolded! Just like the man, the woman suddenly dissolved into formless mist and began to dissipate, while the man’s figure swiftly materialized. “Not bad. ‘Illusory Dissolution and Ethereal Shift’—is that from the Yin-Yang Sect? Or perhaps the ‘Extreme Yin Twins’? Achieving Yin and Yang is easy, but attaining both extremes is rare. To cultivate ‘Extreme Yin’ through the union of Dragon and Phoenix—such promising talent. Doesn’t the Yin-Yang Sect feel a twinge of regret sending them here?” As the little man spoke, the Ant King had already been dazzled by the sibling duo’s mystical techniques, losing both legs once more. Enraged, the Ant King spat out black flames again, but what met it in return was yet another icy dart. “What a terrifying pair of siblings!” The little man sneered, clapping his hands. Instantly, the Ant King retreated at breakneck speed, and at the same moment, a massive swarm of Netherfire Ants surged through the hole torn open behind the little man! “This is a Netherfire Ant lair—there are tens of thousands of them. Do you really think you can kill them all?” The sarcastic laughter reached the siblings’ ears, but it did not instill fear in them. Instead, it drew a contemptuous laugh from the woman: “Judging by your words, you’re quite the expert. I don’t know what you are, but if you’re truly powerful, why would you need to rely on mere ants?” As she spoke, the woman suddenly charged at her brother. To their surprise, the man did not dodge or flinch; instead, he met her head-on. Upon colliding, both of them dissolved like smoke. Yet in the very next instant, the smoke rapidly coalesced, reforming into a single person! “The merging of the Twin Yin—impossible! How could anyone master this technique without reaching the Spirit-Martial Realm? Could it really be because I’ve been asleep for too long?” This time, the little person lost all composure, and her body slowly drifted backward. “Trying to run!” The Extreme Yin Twins, now fused into a single figure, possessed a tall, slender stature, a seductive, delicate form, and a face of unparalleled beauty—yet her features were etched with a fierce, savage expression. With a single movement, he moved like a sharp sword, knocking all the Netherfire Ants blocking his path aside. “Stop him!” The little man’s voice was shrill yet left no room for argument; all the Netherfire Ants threw caution to the wind and lunged at the Extreme Yin Twin. “Die, all of you!” The Extreme Yin Twins roared, their voices as melodious as heavenly music, yet their attack was deadly. As they swung their palms, a chill spread in all directions; every Netherfire Ant within a zhang of them was instantly frozen into an ice sculpture! “Impossible… I get it now!” The little man was stunned for a moment, then suddenly realized something. He immediately let out a sinister laugh: “You were once conjoined twins. Hmph, I’ll see just how long you can hold out!” No sooner had the little man finished speaking than the ant chamber began to shake violently. Immediately afterward, countless Netherfire Ants surged in like a raging flood, unstoppable. “Oh no!” At that moment, Jiang Tang, who had been in a state of feigned death, could no longer lie still! More and more Netherfire Ants were surging into the ant chamber, already crowding close to them. If they were touched by even one, the outcome was all too predictable. After all, an illusion is just an illusion—and a very low-level seven-person illusion array at that. It might fool the naked eye and low-level divine sense, but expecting it to fool the sense of touch was pure fantasy. Just as several Netherfire Ants collided with the Wolf Golem, a flash of blade light sliced through the air, instantly cleaving three of them in half. “Huh?” The Extreme Yin Twins, who had been busy exterminating the Netherfire Ants, jolted and turned their heads in astonishment. Almost at the same moment, the little man also froze in surprise, staring in astonishment at the dark-skinned youth and several puppets that had appeared out of thin air. “Let’s go!” Jiang Tang barked coldly. With a wave of his hand, he stowed all the puppets into his storage pouch and then charged toward the cave entrance. Dongfang was no slower; dazzling runes shone all around him, and in a flash, he followed closely behind Jiang Tang. “Wait a moment, young man. If we join forces to capture this little scoundrel, a swarm of ants will be nothing to fear!” The Extreme Yin Twins suddenly leaped backward, appearing before Jiang Tang in an instant to block his path. Looking at the unbelievably beautiful Extreme Yin Twins before him, Jiang Tang’s expression turned grim. “Get lost.” Faced with Jiang Tang’s rebuke, the Extreme Yin Twins didn’t budge an inch. They glanced sideways at the protective barrier at the cave entrance, which was under attack by the Netherfire Ants, and said, “Do you really think you can escape?” “Jiang Tang, have him hand over the Netherfire to you.” As Dongfang spoke, he turned and fired several Spiderweb Shells toward the rear, blocking the Netherfire Ants from closing in. Upon hearing this, Jiang Tang’s mind raced; he suppressed his anger and said coldly, “I’ll join forces with you—but give me the Netherfire.” A flash of anger suddenly crossed the Extreme Yin Twins’ faces, but in just a moment, their expressions miraculously softened into one of warmth and affection, as if Jiang Tang had become their beloved. That tender, water-like gaze sent shivers down Jiang Tang’s spine. “Take it!” With a seductive smile, the Extreme Yin Twins actually tossed the glass vial containing the Netherfire to Jiang Tang. “I’ll guard your flanks—you go capture that little villain!” As Jiang Tang spoke, the Extreme Yin Twins had already charged toward the villain. At the same time, Dongfang flicked his wrist, firing over a dozen Spiderweb Shells that entangled and killed all the Netherfire Ants swarming toward the Extreme Yin Twins. Jiang Tang rushed ahead to position himself in front of the Extreme Yin Twins. With a flick of the twin blades in his left and right hands, in an instant, more than a dozen layers of blade light sliced the Underworld Fire Ants pouring into the ant chamber into segments—heads, thoraxes, and abdomens—each cut cleanly and precisely, without causing unnecessary damage to these valuable materials. “Whoosh!” Countless corpses of Netherfire Ants floated upward, transforming into wispy streams of light that drifted into the storage pouch in Dongfang Xiao’s hand. “This…” The Extreme Yin Twins were at a loss for words. In the blink of an eye, they gathered their composure; their gazes turned cold as the Extreme Yin Twins charged toward the little figure at an even faster pace. Jiang Tang fought his way through to clear a path ahead. Seeing the little figure about to escape, he bellowed, “Dongfang.” Dongfang understood immediately and raised his hand, firing a Spider Web Projectile at the little figure. As a Netherfire Ant lunged toward the Spider Web Shell, Jiang Tang snorted coldly, “You’re asking for death!” and brought his curved blade down in a slashing strike. Immediately afterward, the Extreme Yin Twins darted through the severed remains of the Netherfire Ant. With a flick of their wrists, more than a dozen ice darts flew toward the little man. Though the little man was agile enough to dodge each one, the spider web projectile that had passed through him suddenly exploded, rapidly merging with the ice darts to form an ice blossom—a wall of ice that blocked his retreat. “Damn it!” the little man roared in fury. As he spun around, black flames surged from his body, and a terrifying aura of pressure suddenly descended upon the Extreme Yin Twins and Jiang Tang, causing the two to falter slightly in their charge—especially the Extreme Yin Twins, who almost instinctively began to kneel. “What an overwhelming spiritual pressure!” Just as the Extreme Yin Twins were reeling from shock, an even more astonishing sight unfolded. Despite the little man’s overwhelming divine pressure, Jiang Tang continued to charge forward. With a flick of his wrist, his curved blade transformed into a bone spear as if by magic. “Boom!” A beam of white light struck the little man directly. “Dongfang!” he roared. Without breaking his momentum, Jiang Tang flung his arm out, firing two more bone spears to block the little figure’s escape. At the same time, Dongfang flashed into position above Jiang Tang’s head. Eight bone spines suddenly extended from his back, shooting out spider-like threads toward the charging Netherfire Ants. The threads wrapped around them in an instant, flinging every Netherfire Ant that had attempted to block Jiang Tang’s path away. “Boom!” The ground suddenly split open, and immediately afterward, the massive head of an Ant King emerged, its giant mandibles snapping toward Jiang Tang’s legs. “Leave it to us!” The Extreme Yin Twins finally snapped out of their daze. They charged forward and appeared before the ant king, striking its lower jaw with a single palm strike. In an instant, the ant king was frozen solid, its massive mandibles unable to close any longer. Jiang Tang instantly circled around the Ant King, leaping and spinning in midair like a top. The twin blades in his hands whipped up a gale of energy, reducing all the Netherfire Ants that had lunged at him to dust. “Don’t get too cocky, you upstart!” The little man roared furiously, raising one palm and lowering the other. As they parted and came together, a black glow burst forth from between his palms, enveloping Jiang Tang. A terrifying suction force seemed poised to swallow him whole. Seeing the situation turn dire, Dongfang shot spider silk from all eight bone spines simultaneously, binding Jiang Tang tightly. However, this merely caused Jiang Tang to falter for a moment; soon after, Dongfang, too, was forcibly pulled into the black light along with Jiang Tang. In the blink of an eye, the black light receded. Neither Jiang Tang nor Dongfang could be seen in the ant hole anymore, leaving behind only the stunned Extreme Yin Twins and the surging swarm of Netherfire Ants closing in on him!
